Meeting Ever-Changing Needs: Ten Years of Caring Coalition

The families Caring Coalition serves are an inspiration every single day.

Over the years, they have faced challenge after challenge. Through rising costs, changing government and community assistance programs, a global pandemic, and countless personal hardships, they have continued to move forward with incredible resilience, determination, and concern for those who have even less.

With the support of the community, Caring Coalition has simply tried to make sure they haven't had to face those challenges alone.

Our story began in 2016, when concerned neighbors noticed that some of the children attending school appeared to be struggling. Conversations with the school social worker revealed a heartbreaking reality: many students relied on school breakfast and lunch as their primary source of food, leaving weekends especially difficult for their families.

In response, Caring Coalition launched the Backpack Food Program.

Every week, volunteers gathered to pack bags with easy-to-open, nutritious food for children to take home on Fridays. What started as a simple act of neighbors helping neighbors quickly became a lifeline for many families. One of our volunteers, who also served as a substitute teacher, shared that some students told him those weekend food bags were sometimes the only food they had until they returned to school on Monday.

Then, in 2020, everything changed.

As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted schools and daily life, the Backpack Food Program could no longer operate the way it had before. Families who were already struggling suddenly faced empty grocery shelves, interrupted routines, and growing uncertainty.

Caring Coalition adapted.

Instead of distributing backpacks through the schools, volunteers began delivering boxes of non-perishable food directly to families' homes. What began as a temporary solution became a new way of serving our community, allowing us to reach even more families in need.

The challenges didn't end with the pandemic.

Today, many families continue to navigate rising grocery prices, changes to SNAP benefits, housing and financial pressures, and safety concerns that make everyday life feel uncertain. Yet despite these hardships, we continue to witness remarkable acts of kindness from the very families we serve.

They share food with neighbors who have even less. They refer other families who need help. They encourage one another, celebrate each other's successes, and remind us that community is strongest when people lift each other up.

We've also had the privilege of watching children grow. Students who once received weekend food bags have graduated from high school, completed vocational programs, enrolled in college, and begun building bright futures for themselves and their families.

Those moments remind us why this work matters.

None of it would be possible without the generosity of our volunteers, donors, and community partners. Every food box packed, every delivery made, and every child or family supported is the result of people coming together with a shared purpose.

We don't know what challenges the future will bring.

What we do know is that, together as a caring community, we'll continue to meet them, just as we always have. Because when a community cares for one another, hope grows stronger, families become more resilient, and no one has to face life's challenges alone.
